Huge Database
I am currently importing 1.4 million records to our database. It will be exciting to see how SQL server handles this large number of records and how will our application cope with the size.
I have never worked with so much data before, on my previous position, the most records we have on a table would amount to thousand records, thus DB performance might not be an issue.
Hello world!
I want to blog my tech stuffs on a separate blog. I think most I will blog more on Coldfusion simply because it’s actually quite hard to find help on Coldfusion (as opposed to PHP for example).
This blog is my inspiration at the moment, loving it!:Ben Nadel
Hardware Upgrade
Last major computer upgrade was 2003, I spent:
$168 for GA-8PE800 Motherboardn
$298 for P 2.4 CPU
$163 for PQI DDR333 768 MB
$60 for CPU case
? Harddisk (80GB Seagate)
From then on, I bought a DVD drive, a new graphic card NVIDIA GeForce FX5200, DVD writer and wireless keyboard and mouse.
My 17″ LG Monitor and Altec Lansing speaker are the two things that probably older than any other part of my computer. I am contemplating a dual LCD screens setup, although I still like CRT better, buat dual CRT will take too much space. I am really pleased with my speaker, it sounds good, didn’t cost too much and it’s lasting quite a while.
I need a new HD soon, if I want to keep up with the technology, I would need to buy a SATA one, but my mobo doesn’t support SATA, will it mean that i need to upgrade mobo too, which might well mean upgrading CPU and memory in the process.. I would also need more memory, running servers, dreamweaver and firefox is quite slow.
Hm, might as well upgrade the whole thing, but my next major upgrade cycle is still 2 years away. I guess I have to be content with what I have for the time being.
Woot.. no MVC??
Our new framework has gone quite a major “upgrade” recently. The database abstraction layer is changed considerably to accomodate the usage of newere PHP’s MySQL interface called MySQLi.
MySQLi is supposedly better than the standard PHP’s MySQL interface. One notably advantage is the support of prepared statement. After using it for a week, I guess the benefit for our system is not that noticeable, mainly because our projects so far don’t use SQL transactions that intensively. I’m just thinking whether it’s worth the effort of upgrading it at all.. Especially when today, I was reminded by my boss, that our system is not MVC based.. and I was stu

Nested SQL
Been trying to optimise some SQL queries for the artauction this morning. There are some queries that use 2 SQL statements at the moment, and i can’t reduce them to one due to nested queries not supported in MySQL 4.0… so for simple query like returning a record from a table which has the max value in one of its columns i need to do 2 SQL queries, one to get the max the other to get the row which has that max value. Is there a performance issue doing it this way or is it just messier?
Too many options
for an open source CMS solution. Just have a look (and play around) at Open Source CMS. I’m looking for ideas from these systems for our framework update. But nothing outstanding so far, some of them are overloaded with features.
Update: modxcms looks quite interesting, it’s got Ajax built in and it also uses script.aculo.us to do some nice javascript effects.. will have a look.
Blah
Finally finished COMP 9322 assignment 2. Did the demo today, was a bit dissapointed with it actually, I know the site logic isn’t logical esp the order page, but I didn’t really make a fuss over it coz i think it’s his artistic freedom
But anyway, glad that it’s over. Ass 3 is already out, but this time flie will not be too busy with his thesis and bla2, i hope he can do most of it, as i have to restrain myself from overworking.
Quite impressed with BT’s customer service, I am rolling over 2 super funds to them, and they have been following up my queries, phoning me informing the progress of the rollovers, despite the amount of my rollovers (not accumulating much
)…
This Sat there’s a TRAIN thing for da men as the ladies are going to EQUIP. Want to go with plita guyz, but so far i havent heard any plan yet. But mostly i will give it a miss, i just need to be relaxed at home this weekend, do some cleaning up (oh can’t stand the mess that i have made!), packing up, and yes finally after 2-3 weeks absent, i will finally be able to give my beloved gym a visit. Will need to borrow movies to watch with wife too.. thinking Chicken Little/Hitch and/or Skeleton Key.
Weekend..
felixt.org was off from the www for few hours today, apparently my subscription with Hostingshop has expired. They usually send me email remainder weeks before, but not this time, forgot to ask why.. Luckily they were quick to respond to my queries, once i paid online, i emailed em and then they re-activate me accnt. Was afraid for a moment that felixt.org will be snatched by domain squatters
Well, even if it happend, can always find get other domains i suppose..
Hm, will not be able to rest tomorrow, need to do some packing up, shopping and then look for a new unit. Also got group meeting at 5pm. Hm.. dun feel like spending more time on this assignment, it’s abt time the other members contribute more.. i aim happy with a pass so … oh yeah, need to hit the gym as well, once a week exercise is really far from ideal, have to life with it i suppose.. exercise is kinda luxury thing for me right now (timewise).
Installed PhpBB on Confucius Tech new website. Integrated Charcoal2 template with the website layout, the template matches the website design very well. Looking at Confucius Tech’s current website and forum, reminds me of the good old days of CS ans WC3.. Why do people have to grow up? Can’t we all just play comp games forever..
